Aviation in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is approximately the same size as Western Europe, covering an area of 2.24 million square miles. With a population of 28 million, Saudi Arabia is not dense in relation to the size of the country. The population is expected to reach 39 million in 2020 and 47 million in 2030. The size of the country, coupled with the distribution of the population, means that air travel is vital to the economy.

There are four international and 26 regional/domestic airports in Saudi Arabia with a total throughput in 2008 of 39 million passengers, although this is forecast to rise to 45m by 2017. GACA have estimated that the government will invest at least US $5.3 billion in airports development and expansion plans over the next 20 years.

The civil aviation marketplace in the Kingdom continues to open up and is assuming a more modern and western approach to business. This is evidenced in initiatives such as the corporatization of the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), the number of privatization initiatives underway and many airport development projects across the country.
